Summer Waxing Tips: What your Waxer Wants You to Know

Summer Waxing Tips: What Your Waxer Wants You To Know

Summer means beach days, tanning, vacations, pool time… and suddenly everyone remembers they need a wax appointment the night before their trip!

But summer can also make your skin a little more sensitive than usual. Here are a few things to keep in mind to help keep your waxes comfortable, your skin happy, and avoid the dreadful message from your waxer… “I can’t wax you.” :(

Sunburn + Waxing Are NOT Friends

If your skin is sunburned, peeling, freshly tanned, or feeling extra sensitive, waxing will def need to wait.

Waxing already exfoliates the skin, so adding too much sun exposure on top of that can increase irritation and sensitivity. Skin that’s been overexposed to the sun is much more delicate and more prone to lifting during a wax service. Try to avoid heavy sun exposure to the area you want waxed before your appointment whenever possible.

Basically… if your skin looks like it lost a fight with the sun, your wax appointment is probably getting a rain check.

Heat Can Make Skin More Sensitive

Summer heat can make your skin way more reactive than usual and we all know how brutal Virginia summers can be.

Sweating, friction, humidity, tight clothing, and heat can all contribute to irritation both before and after a wax — especially in more sensitive areas.

After your appointment, give your skin a little extra love. Loose clothing, staying cool, and avoiding things like intense workouts, hot tubs, saunas, or excessive sweating for about 24 hours can make a huge difference in how your skin feels afterward. The less friction on freshly waxed skin, the better.

Bathing Suits + Ingrowns

Swimsuits, sweat, and friction can definitely contribute to ingrown hairs during the summer months.

Wet bathing suits sitting against the skin for long periods of time can irritate the area and trap dead skin, especially with all the extra heat and sweating that comes with summer.

The good news is that consistency and aftercare make a HUGE difference. Regular exfoliation, keeping the skin hydrated, using products made to help with ingrowns, and changing out of wet swimsuits sooner rather than later can all help keep your skin smoother and happier.

Summer skin loves consistency!

Vacation Waxing Does NOT Have to Be Stressful

Once you know about your vacation, let’s plan your waxing schedule ahead of time so you can actually enjoy your trip instead of panic-booking an appointment the day before. Try to schedule your wax appointment 2–3 days before leaving if possible. This gives your skin time to calm down before long beach days, chlorine, salt water, and sun exposure.

And don’t forget SPF — especially after facial waxing. We have to protect our gorgeous skin!

Summer waxes should make life easier, not more irritating. A little prep and aftercare can go a long way in keeping your skin smooth, comfortable, and happy all season long.
